John T. Collopy was born on May 1, 1858 in Mayville, Mason, Kentucky to parents Patrick Collopy and Hanora Connell.

 

According to the Evening Bulletin 10 Nov 1899 John T. Collopy married Margaret Hackett Archdeacon around November 10, 1899 in Maysville.  Margaret (maiden name “Hackett” had previously married John J. Archdeacon in 1881.  John Archdeacon died in 1897 at the age of 43.  He had been a Saloon Keeper.

The census of 1900 tells us that Margaret Hackett Archdeacon had two children with her first husband – they were Joseph Archdeacon aged 18 and Mary Archdeacon aged 16.  I am not sure whether John’s occupation is Mechanic Sales or Merchant Saloon in the census.

 

In 1914 John T Collopy and his family were living at 370 Rose Street, Lexinton, Kentucky, USA.  He was working as a clerk and was 56 years old.

John T. Collopy was 61 years old when he died – not 68 as in the “United States, Officer Down Memorials, 1791-2014”

Notes: Officer Collopy was fatally struck by a vehicle on Walnut Street as he and another officer attempted to stop it for driving without headlights. The driver of the vehicle swerved and struck Officer Collopy when he was ordered to stop. The driver was arrested by a lieutenant and charged with manslaughter. Officer Collopy had served with the agency for 3 years. He was survived by his wife and ten children.  (I think that is a misprint and it should say two children).

This year’s historical recognitions range from 1889 to 1999. Historical honorees added to the memorial include U.S. Marshal Service Deputy Marshall Russell Wireman, Johnson County Sheriff’s Deputy Dolie C. Harmon, Fayette County Police Officer Clifford Hall, Kentucky Fish and Wildlife Officer Bernard D. Ratliff, and Lexington Police Force Officers Preston Pullen and John T. Collopy.

Margaret died at Kenton County Infirmary, Covington, Kenton County, Kentucky on January 26, 1958 at the age of 99.  She had been in the infirmary 12 years.  Cause of death was myocarial degeneration due to arterio sclerosis.
