Jeremiah (Dermot) Clifford
1857 July 12 -Dermot Clifford was born in Mahoonagh, Limerick, Ireland, to parents Johanna Fitzgerald, age 37, and James Clifford, age 42.
When Dermot was 8 years old, his father, James, passed away in 1865 in Newcastle West, Limerick, Ireland, at the age of 50.
In 1866, at the age of 19 Jeremiah’s elder brother, Thomas sailed to the USA and then in 1867 his elder sister, Catherine followed Thomas.
In 1872, at the age of 15, Dermot arrived in the USA, according to 1920 Census, and was met by Catherine (according to writing on a photo)
In 1890, he lived in Chicago, Illinois.
In 1891, on January 20, Dermot Clifford married Mary Betts in Big Stone, Minnesota. He was 33 years old.
Mary Betts 1867–1942 Mary survived Jeremiah by another 13 years.

On a cold January day at the Church of St. Mary in Beardsley, Minnesota, Jeremiah F. Clifford and Mary Betts were married. Documented on page 276 of Big Stone County’s Marriage Book A, the ceremony was witnessed by Louis Betts and Lile Dwyer. The couple’s union was officiated by Rev. Lig. Darche, the pastor.

On October 16, 1891, in Big Stone, Minnesota, Jeremiah and Mary Clifford welcomed their first son, William Francis Clifford. William served as an Army veteran in World War I. After falling ill, he spent ten days in the hospital in Graceville, MN, where he ultimately passed away from paralysis. He never married.
However, if the following is his death certificate, it says William died at home of chronic alcoholism
In 1892, their daughter Mary J. Clifford was born in Minnesota. She died at the age of 67 of a heart attack in a hospital where she had been a patient for the past 5 months due to head injuries sustained in a traffic accident.
On May 10, 1894, in Big Stone, Minnesota, Jeremiah and Mary Clifford celebrated the birth of their son, Jeremiah Victor Clifford.
Jeremiah Victor Clifford served in the U.S. Army, enlisting on May 3, 1918, and was honorably discharged on June 22, 1918, at the rank of Private. He passed away on July 11, 1972, at the age of 78 in Richfield, MN, and was laid to rest on July 14, 1972, at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Section P, Site 350.
Jeremiah was survived by his three sisters: Ann Stiles of Minneapolis, Grace Burns of Brandon, MN, and Alice Anderson of St. Paul. His funeral mass was held at St. Stephen’s Church, with visitation at the Gleason Mortuary in Minneapolis. He married a woman named Mary sometime after 1930, but further details of his married life remain unknown.
His death certificate says Jeremiah Victor died, aged 78, on July 11, 1972, of cardio vascular failure due to cerebral thrombosis as a consequence of Diabetes Mellitus
In 1895 on August 17, their daughter Ann Clifford was born in Big Stone, Minnesota. She married Ralph D. Stiles of 21 Lake Mills on August 27, 1927.
In 1896, on November 27, their daughter Grace Eugenia Clifford was born in Graceville, Minnesota.
On Dec 11, 1999 Grace Euginia Clifford Byrne passed away at Knute Melson Memorial Home, 420 12th Ave E. 56308, Alexandria, Douglas County, Minnessota, at the age of 103 years.

Blanche G. Clifford married Raymond Michael Lang in Barry, Minnesota, on April 13, 1920, when she was 18 years old.
Blanche Clifford Lang passed away on Dc 12, 1970 at the age of 69 years at the Metropolitan Medical Center, Minneapolis. Cause of death was Mediastinal lymphoma, (Primary Mediastinal B-cell Lymphoma (PMBCL), a relatively rare type o non-Hodgkin lymphoma that is characterized by a tumor mass inthe space between the lungs).
In 1903 on 29 Sept their son Clarence Charles Clifford was born in Big Stone, Minnesota.
In 1906 on 3 July their daughter Alice Elizabeth Clifford was born, in Big Stone, Minnesota.
In 1909 on 8 Aug their son James Lester Clifford was born on August 8, 1909, in Barry, Minnesota.
On June 21, 1990 James Lester passed away. We learn from his death certificate tells us he served in the US armed forces and that he died while a patient at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis. The cause of his death was septic shock resulting from left lower lobe pneumonia due to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
James Lester Clifford had been unmarried and a farmer in Minnesota. At his time of death his address was 5101 Minnehaha Ave – from Google Maps I think this is a Veterans home. The death was registered by his sister, Alice Clifford Anderson of 727 Geranium Avenue, St. Paul, Minnesota, MN 55106.
Death of the Father – Jeremiah (Dermot) Clifford
On 21 February 1929, at the age of 71, Jeremiah (Dermot) Clifford passed away in deeply unfortunate circumstances. His death certificate records the cause as smoke inhalation, the result of a fire that broke out after he fell asleep in bed—likely due to a lit cigarette. It also notes his long-standing battle with alcoholism as a contributing factor. His son, Clarence, was the one who bore the sad duty of registering his death.
